Comparing The ISEE And The SSAT Which is better: the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) or the Secondary School Aptitude Test (SSAT)? Well, both are used for entrance into private/independent schools, but theyre not exactly interchangeable. Some independent schools will accept only the ISEE, others only the SSAT, and some will consider whichever test you scored higher on. But, before you spend tons of hours prepping for one test, make sure the school(s) youre interested in accept it. Test levels: First of all, the ISEE has three levels: lower for students currently in grades 4-5, middle for grades 6-7 and upper for grades 8-11. The SSAT only has two levels: lower for students currently in grades 5-7 and upper for grades 8-11. Test format: Both tests have five sections with multiple choice questions (Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematical Achievement and an optional essay). You can opt to send your essay to schools, or you can leave it off from your scoring report entirely. But, its in your best interest to prep for the essay and include it. The main difference is that the ISEE has synonym recognition and sentence completion questions in its Verbal Reasoning Section, and the SSAT has synonym recognition and analogy questions instead of sentence completion. Analogies will ask you to compare meaning of words. Score reporting: This is the biggest difference between the two tests. You can take the SSAT multiple times per year, and combine your best section scores from the separate tests. But, you can only take the ISEE once every six months, meaning you can only report one set of scores. Scoring: For each test, you will be given a numerical score and a percentile rank. But, schools really only look at your percentile rank. Top schools expect students to score in the top 90th percentile better than 90 percent of your peers. Average schools want scores in the top 75th percentile, and some below-average schools will accept students in the top 50th percentile. When to guess? There is no penalty for an incorrect answer on the ISEE, but you will be penalized 0.25 points for one on the SSAT. So, if you can narrow down to three possible answer choices, then guess. Which is easier SSAT or ISEE? The questions should be equally difficult on each test, although there might be slight variations. But, some students find the ISEE easier because there is no penalty for guessing. Which test to take? First, you need to find out which test the schools youre applying to accept. But, if they accept both and youre serious about preparing, the SSAT might be your better choice because you can take it multiple times. This will give you more time to prepare and learn from your mistakes. SSAT/ISEE prep: The prep can be totally different for each test. For the ISEE, you need to prepare to ace the test the very first time you take it. So, you need to take multiple, full-length practice tests. But, because youre allowed to combine scores on the SSAT, you could prepare for a couple sections at a time. However, you still need to form a preparation plan and adhere to it. 3 Ways To Work with an LSAT Tutor LSAT Law School Blog There are many ways to have a great experience with an LSAT tutor. The key is to decide what role you want the tutor to play in your LSAT preparation. One sure-fire way to have a bad experience is to develop a certain set of expectations, not communicate those expectations to your tutor, and then become frustrated as the sessions come and go and you aren’t getting what you expected from the relationship. As you think about hiring an LSAT tutor, it can be a good idea to keep three tutor “archetypes” in mind. Obviously, your tutor might be a bit of a combination of these three archetypes, but if you read through the three descriptions below and identify better with one than the others, then you can communicate those expectations to your tutor (and choose the right tutor in the first place). Three Ways to Work with an LSAT Tutor Here are the three types of LSAT tutors that students typically seek: 1. Guide/Mentor Tutor Your tutor is with you every step of the way in your LSAT prep process. In your first meeting you craft a personal study plan with the tutor. Your tutor helps you stay on track with the study plan by assigning homework and checking in regularly. You and your tutor meet on a regular basis, at least once a week, to work on developing your skills. You modify your study plan periodically to reflect your growth as you progress through the study plan. This type of tutor works best for students who have lots of time before the LSAT and like have formal structure to their tutoring relationships. Note of caution â€" if you’re looking for this type of tutoring relationship, and the potential tutor you’re evaluating seems brilliant but really unstructured and doesn’t even talk about study planning when describing his or her approach, then this particular tutor probably isn’t the one for you. Another note of caution â€" you still “own” your LSAT prep. Don’t use a tutor as a crutch â€" you need to understand the core concepts tested on the LSAT on a deep level on your own, not just when the tutor explains them. 2. “On-Call” Tutor You create a study plan together. Then your tutor is available to answer specific questions for an hour every week or so. You do most of your studying on your own and design your own homework plans. You tutor serves more as a specialist, who you turn to in those few areas that are tougher for you, or to help you understand the really difficult problems. This tutor is ideal for the student who has already done a decent amount of self-study and is looking for specific guidance to break into the higher tier scores. 3. “Crash Course” Tutor Your tutor dives in and helps you on specific areas where you are weakest. There is no real formal study plan. Meetings with your tutor run more on a triage system, focuses on areas where you are missing “easy” points. This type of tutor is ideal when you have little time to prepare for the test and need to bolster your basic skills in one area quickly. This type of tutor may also work well for students who are solid in most areas of the LSAT, but are weak in one section, for example, a student that needs focused LSAT Logic Games tutoring. A note of caution on options 2 and 3 above â€" if you think an on-call or a crash course tutor makes sense for you, make sure you are realistic as you assess your progress as your test-date nears. Trying to work with a tutor at the last minute, weeks before your test, can be stressful. So, if you are going to use the “on-call” or “crash-course” approach with an LSAT tutor, plan your tutoring sessions far enough in advance. Summary LSAT tutoring can be expensive relative to self-study or LSAT classes, yet at the same time, private, customized help on the LSAT can help you achieve a score that you otherwise would not have achieved â€" if you use an LSAT tutor effectively and efficiently. Top 5 Questions to Ask a Career Counselor Image via Pixabay What to Expect Before even thinking about putting together a list of every possible question that pops into your head for the career center, its important to first understand what exactly to expect during an appointment. Doing so can not only possibly answer some of the questions you may have but it can also alleviate some stresses and anxieties you might have about the appointment itself. Don’t Expect a Job, Rather Expect a Job Hunt.  Many students are under the false impression that going to a career center is an automatic guarantee of a job. While reaching out to a career center can help you find a job, it is not a lottery of job offerings with you having the lucky scratch-off ticket. With that being said, during your appointment with an advisor, expect them to help you narrow down career choices, pull out inner strengths, discover your passions and compliment those with your skills. This personal evaluation will help you figure out what kind of job you want and in a specific field. According to Richard White, the career center director at Rutgers University, “We [the career center] offer on-campus interviews, career days, e-fairs, information sessions, job postings, resume databases, open houses and special events. Don’t Expect to be Told, Rather Expect to be Shown.  It is natural to assume that going to a place like a career center that you will be told what to do, because after all, school advisors and teachers have done that in our past elementary, middle and high school lives. However, the game is different in college, and instead of being told what to do, you will be shown what to do. With this being said, do not expect an advisor to push you in a direction of a major or career path, like a parent would. It’s not their job to do that. Rather, expect them to help you find what might be a good fit for you based on your major, skills, traits and characteristics, etc. According to Peter Vogt, a Senior Contributor at Monster, “More realistically, your career center will teach you how to explore majors and careers that might be a good fit for you. The professionals at your schools career center should have both the resources and personal expertise that will help you explore majors and careers thoroughly. The career center should also have data on the jobs landed by past graduates in various majors from your school.” Remember Staff Limitations and Be Smart with Timing.  For many college students, procrastination and waiting until the very last minute to do something is basically apart of our DNA. When considering making an appointment with a career center, be responsible and considerate of your timing, meaning, do not expect to drop in and snag an appointment. Many times, advisors take walk-in appointments but this causes a disruption for their schedule for the remainder of the day. Just remember that above all, the professionals at the career center want to help you and ultimately respect you, so it is your obligation to respect them in return. The following questions are clear, easy to follow and within the range of your advisor to answer. While there are a plethora of questions that you can ask, some that advisors may or may not be able to answer, in my opinion, these are the top five questions to ask at your career center. 1. What can I do to boost/edit my resume? One of the most important elements of the job process is your resumè. In order to stand out the best you possibly can to potential employers, be sure to constantly and consistently construct your resume. Advisors at your campus career center can definitely help you refine, polish and boost your resume to make it attractive to employers. Don’t worry about the formatting being awful, not having a good amount of experience on paper, or the whole thing just being certified ‘trashable’, it is OK if your resume is a work in progress. Advisors don’t expect you to arrive at your appointment with a perfect resume because if you did, they would partially be out of a job! According to Sarah Yoo of the Muse, “Bring a draft, or even a list of all your experiences and activitiesâ€"from your internships to  being a publicity chair in a volunteer club on-campus to spending your summers as a lifeguard. Counselors can help you craft experience descriptions that draw attention to the skills and personal qualities you have that employers are seeking.” 2. How can I make the most out of my strengths? Many college students have a hard time figuring out their strengths. According to Raymond Tang of Careermetis.com, “Plenty of graduates, job entrants and job-changers only know what they are functionally good at i.e. being good at coding, filling out balance sheets, writing content, etc. but lack the identification of soft skills that are often overlooked.” Career center counselors and advisors can help draw out these softer strengths, helping you identify the skills that you naturally possess skills that will be attractive to potential employers. Not only will advisors help you identify these skills, but they will also help you convey them to employers. Unfortunately, it is not enough just to know you have these strengths, you have to show them. 3. How can I network effectively? As technology has advanced, so has the increased presence of the job opportunities on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. During your appointment, log into social media accounts with a counselor. In order to create and build a strong social media platform, your counselor will help you clean up your accounts by suggesting which pictures, posts and comments to remove to help to make you look better in the eyes of an employer. Second, your counselor will help you search for your ideal job by suggesting using keywords on search engines, job sites and social media. You can even look for people with similar interests as you in regards to finding a job! Doing these two things can definitely help you get on track to networking, but some other advice an advisor might offer is to reach out to your professors, join club organizations, and talk to classmates! 4. What is the best job search strategy for me? It makes sense that since every one of us is different, that we would all have different approaches and strategies to searching for a job. It can be difficult to figure out this approach by yourself since you may not know what is most beneficial for you, but don’t worry, this is where an advisor comes in! Some meaningful and helpful questions to ask your counselor, Sarah Yoo notes are, “How should I allocate my search time between networking,  informational interviews, and applying for jobs? What strategies have been effective for other people applying for these types of positions?” 5. What are my next steps? Your first appointment with an advisor at the career center will be full of great tips and advice, but it will most likely need to be followed up with multiple follow-up appointments. Hence, it is important to ask your counselor what your next steps should be both during the waiting period to see them, and what to expect during your next appointment. They may want you to individually polish your resume to review in the future, or perhaps explore some fields that you may be interested in exploring jobs in. Regardless of what your next steps are, it is important to get an understanding with an advisor on the appropriate actions to take for the future!
